Giggjig July 11/2014 (ESA) The Speaker of the House of People's Representatives of the Federation, Ato Tages Chafo, said that the Green Footprint Planting Program in Ethiopia will contribute significantly to achieving sustainable development and prosperity by controlling drought.
The Speaker of the Federal House of People's Representatives Mr. Tagese Tzafo, the Head of Government of the Somali Region Mr. Mustafe Muhammad, senior federal and regional officials, today held a sapling planting ceremony in Jigjiga city.
It has been stated that 1 million 500 thousand saplings will be planted in this year's Arangwade footprint program in the Somali region.
In the program, it has been pointed out that to prevent barrenness, fruits and other important types of seedlings are used for food.
The speaker of the council, Tagese Thafo, said on the plantation program that the Green Footprint program is very useful to maintain the agricultural development in a sustainable way by controlling drought and ensuring the country's prosperity.
He also announced that climate change is part of the 2063 African agenda.
He said that our country has been focusing on environmental protection for the past four years to achieve the agenda of the region to build a sustainable economy that is invulnerable to climate change.
According to Mustafa Mohamed, the head of the Somali region, the task of planting saplings is a matter of survival for the Somali region.
They stated that the green footprint program in the region will continue to be strengthened in order to reforest the deprived areas.
On his part, Tesfaye Beljge, Minister of State in the House of Representatives, said, "Currently, our country has designed a strategy for the development of Arangwade and is making efforts to cover the supply of renewable energy sources."
He mentioned that by planting saplings in all areas to deal with the effects of climate change, it contributed to prevent climate change and avoid the drought that occurred in some areas of the country last year.
In Ethiopia, he said, "Green footprint planting will prevent land erosion and prevent water bodies from drying up, and will help to avoid the increasing heat and drought in East Africa."
